The
parish of Fauquier, erected and dedicated to Saint Agnes
will be celebrating the eightieth anniversary of its foundation
in 1997. From 1910 to 1917, Fauquier was a mission served by
Monsignor Gascon, the parish priest from Cochrane and his two
curates, Fathers Dudomaine and Stéphane Laferrière.
Religious services were held in a makeshift chapel in a camp
belonging to Mr. Fauquier. During that same period Fathers Rigaudie
and d'Alberton, Suplicians, offered their religious services
while they were here in the North.
In
January, Bishop Latulippe, Bishop of Haileybury, founded the
parish under the patronage of Saint Agnes. April 3rd of the
same year, Father Stéphane Laferrière was appointed
as the first parish priest. In 1922, with the help of his parishioners
Father Laferrière began construction of the existing
church, on a piece of land donated by Mr. Alphonse Brunet, a
pioneer of Fauquier.
In
1926, Father Arthur Doyon accepted the appointment as parish
priest of Fauquier when Fr. Stéphane Laferrière
left to continue his ministry in Chapleau. Then, in 1953, the
first priest returned to head the parish until July 1959. On
January 21, 1960, Pope John XXIII conferred the honour of Prelate
on Father Laferrière. After a well earned retirement,
Monsignor Stéphane Laferrière was called to his
eternal rest on the 18th of May 1976.
Other
priests succeeded him in the parish. For over ten years, from
July 1959 to December 1970 Fr. Donat Deschenaux took charge
of the parish; from January to December 1971 Fr. Louis-Philippe
Bélanger took over; from January 1972 to August 1977,
Fr. Léon Boily exercised his ministry; from August 1977
to August 1980, Fr. Jean-Paul Décarie became the pastor;
in August 1980 Fr. Georges-Henri Tremblay headed the Christian
community; in June 1993, Fr. Robert Tremblay accepted the position
of parish priest.
Since
September 1993, we reaffirm our pride and joy in the blessing
of having seen «one of our own», Fr. Hervé
Sauvé, ordained to the priesthood here at Saint Agnes
Church. Our prayers accompany him for a fruitful ministry. We
ask Divine Providence to guide four women from our parish who
responded to the call of Christ to minister in a religious community
in their apostolic field. They are Sisters Jeanne d'Arc Lapierre,
s.a.s.v., Carmen De Champlain, s.c.o., Nicole Bérubé,
s.c.o. and Denise Bérubé, c.n.d.
According
to Father Stéphane Laferrière's personal journal,
52 families received his visit in 1917, and 63 in 1920. The
year 1917 recorded 4 baptisms, 3 deaths, and 5 marriages. In
1995, the parish composed of some 200 families, registered 4
baptisms, 12 funerals and 2 marriages.
The
parishioners of Saint Agnes take advantage of this occasion
to thank the Lord and also the priests who contributed to the
foundation and vitality of the parish in Fauquier. Each one,
in his own way, with his own charisms guided and served to maintain
the faith, hope and charity of this small Christian community.
